Welcome

Professor Gary Sheffield

Hello! I’m Professor Gary Sheffield. I’m a well-known military historian, specialising in the history of the two World Wars in particular, and this is where you can find out about me, my books and the work I do. This website is a work in progress and will be updated periodically.

Only half-jokingly, I say that I retired to get more work done! After retirement from my day job as Professor of War Studies at the University of Wolverhampton in 2021, I have put together a portfolio career.

I have a very active programme of research and writing. Most importantly  I am currently finishing a book on the experience of soldiers from the UK and Dominions in the two world wars – see my Current Projects page. I regularly review books for journals and magazines. I will be publishing some reviews exclusively on this website, as well as putting up some of my older reviews – see the Book Reviews page.

I also publish short articles on aspects of military history, and I will be putting some of my older pieces on the Articles Archive page.

Another part of my career is as a public speaker. I often give talks to societies, schools, colleges and the like, and I am immensely fortunate to be a regular guest speaker on cruise ships. I am also an accomplished After Dinner speaker. See here for what is coming up. If you would like me to speak at your event, please get in contact here.

I also lead commercial battlefield tours, and tours for private groups, as well as staff rides for military units. Please get in touch if you would like me to lead a tour.

My new career includes being a very active Visiting Professor in the Defence Studies Department of King’s College London, based at the UK’s Defence Academy (I previously taught there in the noughties). At DSD I teach, supervise postgraduate research, lead staff rides to historic battlefields, am involved in collaborative research projects with colleagues, mentor colleagues – and do research in the amazing Joint Services Command and Staff College Library.
